Black Death was a great epidemic of bubonic
plague that ravaged Europe in the 14th
century, killing between one-third and half
of the overall population. The cause of the
plague was the bacterium Yersinia pestis,
transmitted by fleas borne by migrating
Asian black rats. The name Black Death was
first used in England in the early 19th
century.
